How does the garbage collection in Brussels work?

One of the particularities of Brussels is the number of colors of garbage bags that can be found there. The sorting is something very important and respected in the European capital. That's why the team of L Residence helps you to understand better which color of bag corresponds to which waste.

First, it is possible that someone is already taking care of the disposal of all the garbage of your building outside, so that you don't have to do anything more than put them in the containers. It is also possible, if you are staying at L Residence, that the people in charge of the cleaning, who come once a week, will take care of disposing of your garbage for you in the appropriate places. But if you must take out your garbage yourself, don't worry, at the end of this article, you will understand the system and be able to do it all on your own.

Even if you don't have to think about the day of collection, you still need to know how to sort your waste and understand which color bag corresponds to which type of waste. So here is a little memo that might help you.

L Residence - Garbage Collection

Blue garbage bags -> Packaging made from plastic or metal - Beverage cartons

- Crushed bottles and flasks for drinks, shampoo, washing powder, cleaning products, etc. (put the cap back on)

- Trays and bowls of mushrooms, cold cuts, butter, etc.

- Jars and tubes of yogurt, toothpaste, etc.

- Films, bags and pouches, such as shopping bags, drink pack wrappers, food (salad) bags, etc.

- Clean and well emptied cans, tins, dishes, and aluminum trays

- Aerosols (fresh cream, shaving cream, etc.), caps and closures.

- No aluminum foil.

- Juice, milk, tomato paste, soup etc.

Yellow garbage bags -> paper and cardboard

White garbage bags -> residual waste (what doesn’t fit in the other bags)

Orange garbage bags -> food waste

(not available in some buildings, you can therefore use the white bag)

Green garbage bags -> Anything related to nature

For glass (such as bottles or jars), you will find large garbage cans outside your building where you can put your clear glass, and colored glass.

For the collection of the garbage, it depends on the “commune” (district) where you are staying. If you live at L Residence, here is a summary of when the garbage trucks come to pick up your garbage.
